The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

I recently picked up a "best of" collection of Dr. Joseph Murphy's writings. He's probably best known for his book "The Power of the Subconscious Mind." I had never read his work before although it had been recommended a few times. I have found it to be extremely insightful and a very good fit with what I already know and understand about how to make positive changes in life.

I'm gaining a deeper appreciation for the value of "imprinting" the subconscious mind very deliberately with whatever outcomes I would like to have be present in my reality. Imprinting can be done very effectively through visualization, affirmation and prayer, and I've been using all three approaches several times a day. When combined with the resonance approach and removing blocks & barriers first, the imprinting is extremely powerful.

The idea is that when you repeatedly impress upon your subconscious mind the images and thoughts of what you would like to have be present in your life, your subconscious mind eventually takes hold of those thought forms and begins to cause the manifestation of them into your physical reality. The subconscious mind is the bridge between the conscious mind and the super-conscious mind (the level of God and spirit) and it is through this process of impression that we can effectively communicate with the Divine.

An easy way to understand this is to look at habits and how they operate. Here is part of an article I wrote recently on habits.

Human beings truly are creatures of habit. I’ve read on several occasions that the average person thinks over 12,000 thoughts per day (a very thoughtful person may think as many as 50,000) and that 90% of those thoughts are unconscious, habitual and repetitive. The same is true for most of the actions we take throughout our day. And, thank God for that! Can you imagine how exhausting it would be to have to consciously think about all those things ALL the time? Being a creature of habit is a gift, especially when you can put your habits to work for your highest good.

So, if we are in fact creatures of habit, then it makes sense that in order to change anything in our life, we’re probably going to need to change a few habits along the way. In fact, I like to think that habits are the basic building blocks of change.

I’ve found that the key to changing habits in general is to focus on the mental habits of thinking and speaking. These are tapping into the “being” level of your existence. That’s important because we are human beings not human doings. From the being level flows thinking, speaking, action and results.

Being => Thinking => Speaking => Action => Results

The idea of changing habits has gotten a bad rap because it can be pretty difficult to do. What makes changing habits difficult is that usually people try to put a new habit on top of an old one. This is like installing new software on top of old software on your computer. Not a good idea if you want things to work right.

Better to uninstall the old software first, then install the new software. The same is true with habits. But, the challenge then becomes, how do you uninstall an old habit?

Uninstalling Old Habits

Habits, like everything in existence, are composed of energy and information. These are the two fundamental components of all-that-is when you look at the deepest level (quantum physics).

It is possible to disempower habits quite easily when you can cancel the energy component of the habit. The WaveMaker technology I use is the perfect tool for this. It can severely weaken the energy of a habit and render it inactive for a period of time. This gives you a window of opportunity to install the new habit. Then, as you practice the new habit over a few days and weeks, it takes root very easily because the energetic pull of the old habit has been removed.

When the old habit is not removed first, you might get some short term success with the new habit, but you’ll often experience the “rubberband effect” of being snapped back into the old habit after a short while. This is what is frustrating about trying to change things in life. We’ve all experienced this effect and it can start to feel like change just isn’t possible. The bottom line with all of this, and I guess what I'm trying to convey in this article, is that there is a way to have your life be much closer to an ideal life than the life you are currently living. And, the path to that life is much easier than you may realize provided you take the path of least resistance. That path is one on which you use your power of thought and intention, along with the skills of knowing how to stay out of the way so that good things can flow into your experience.

I’ve had some experiences where the old habit was completely gone after “debugging” it with the WaveMaker. Other times, it was still there but in a weakened state. When this happens, I use a technique called “Unplugging the Power Cord” whenever I feel a tug from that old habit. This further disempowers it until it’s pretty much wiped out.

Installing New Habits

The process of installing new habits mostly gets accomplished through repetition and “living into” the new way of being. I’ve also been working lately with a very deliberate imprinting of the subconscious mind using affirmation statements, visualizations and prayer. These three approaches are the best I’ve found so far to get my subconscious mind powerfully aligned with the desires I’d most like to attract and manifest.

Remember, it’s best to focus on the thought level of habits. Which means changing your habitual thinking patterns. What occurs over time when you deliberately imprint your subconscious mind through affirmations, visualization and prayer is that your default thinking begins to change. So, when you’re driving in your car and your mind is wandering off into wherever it goes, you’ll have thoughts that are more inline with what you want in life, rather than what you don’t want. This continues to build and gain momentum and the positive results that follow will also increase.

The Mind Loves Problems

I became very aware of how much my mind loves to chew on problems a couple weeks ago. I was out raking leaves, which is a pretty mindless activity – meaning I don’t have to think about what I’m doing. I noticed that my mind was consistently drawn to any apparent problems in my life. It wanted to think about problems, mostly so it could try to solve them for me I guess.

But I’ve learned that the mind is not the best problem-solving tool at my disposal. Mainly because, the mind loves to CREATE problems so it can then have them to solve. It wants to be the hero and show how valuable it is for problem-solving, yet it is the source of the problems in the first place!

So, recently I did some more raking and I set out to think only positive thoughts the whole time I was working. This was actually easier than you might expect. I used that time to consciously imprint my subconscious with a lot of repetitive thoughts of gratitude, prayer, statements of how I’d like things to be, verbally visualizing aspects of my life and affirming anything I could think of that was positive. I actually had a great time raking leaves!

At one point my neighbor came over and started to complain about something, and I was very keenly aware that he was speaking of something unwanted, which is another word for “problem.” I just listened politely and didn’t add to the complaint or affirm it. I often like to ask the question, “How would you like it to be?” when I hear someone complaining because that question can help them shift their focus from what they don’t want to what the do want.

Conclusion

So, I hope this article has helped you to see a simple access point to change in your life. If you’d like to learn more about how to implement this approach for yourself, please contact me and we can schedule an “Accelerate Your Success” intro coaching session.

I enjoy helping people change in the ways they most want to change. It’s exciting and rewarding to see the difference in peoples’ lives. I’d love to speak with you about that if it’s something you’re interested in.
